Soy For Babies – Not A Healthy Alternative

Here in the United States we have an excess of soy consumption that is causing health problems for babies as well as adults. Unfortunately, all the hype about how good soy is for you, keeps many moms for being aware of the dangers.

Mothers, thorough magazines and advertising have been convinced that soy formula is a good alternative for babies that cannot tolerate milk. Soy for babies is not a healthy alternative because it contains high levels of phytoestrogens that contain growth depressing trypsin inhibitors – which have been know to cause zinc deficiency. Zinc – which is important to the development of the nervous system. In addition, the aluminum content of soy formula is 10x greater than milk and has a toxic effect on the kidneys.

In addition, soy milk is not always easily digestible and can cause cramping, nausea, and more serious health problems such as hypothyroidism. If a child is lactose intolerant a better alternative might be goat milk, almond or rice milk.

Once consumers start reading labels carefully – they will be amazed at the soy content in snack foods, fast foods, and pre-packaged frozen meals. Since it’s often disguised as other ingredients – you have to know what to look for.

I have done my best to maintain a vegan diet for the last three years. I say my best because dairy byproducts are insidious, and I'm sure they find their way into my food as much as I try to avoid them.

In maintaining this type of diet, I look for a variety of food sources to fill my protein requirements. I am absolutely amazed at all the products where soy is found. It makes me a bit nervous as soy has been suspected of increasing the chances of developing breast cancer. For myself, I enjoy coconut milk. I wonder if this could serve as a substitute.

    Thanks for the article!

      Hi Ann,

Coconut milk is a great alternative. It’s also good for your thyroid. Almond milk is a good substitute too!

The only safe soy products are miso, natto and tempeh because they are fully fermented. DON’T give your baby tofu or any soy product because it is bad for their nervous system. Tofu sold in the state is not fermented so the toxins still remain. Rice milk is easier for babies to digest.
